Pitta provides the energy of digestion and metabolism. Made up of the element Fire, Pitta is predominant in the hot, summer months. Pitta types have many of the qualities of fire, such as hot, penetrating, sharp and agitating. Pitta people tend to have warm bodies, a penetrating presence and a sharp intellect. Out of balance, they can become very agitated, irritable and short-tempered. Pitta types have bodies of medium build and height, with a tendency towrd ruddy complexions. They may have many moles or freckles and their skin is generally warm and less wrinkled than vata skin. They often experience premature graying or hair loss.

Pitta individuals have a strong metabolism, strong appetite and good digestion. They like hot, spicy foods and cold drinks, although their constitution is balanced by sweet, bitter and astringent tastes. They perspire easily and their hands and feet stay warm. Pitta people have a low tolerance for sunlight, heat and hard labor because of the abundance of heat in their bodies.

Alert and intelligent with strong comprehension, pitta people are likely to be leaders and planners. However, they are easily agitated and when out of balance tend toward hate, aggression, anger and jealousy. Pitta types are susceptible to diseases involving the fire principle such as fevers, inflammatory diseases and jaundice. Common ailments include skin rashes, burning sensations, hyperacidity and heartburn.
